Duke Anesthesiology’s New Vice Chair of Education

We would like to congratulate Dr. Mark Stafford-Smith for his recent appointment as the Vice Chair of Education. Dr. Stafford-Smith came to Duke in 1992 for a two-year cardiac fellowship, which included a year as a basic science researcher with Dr. Debra Schwinn. In 1996, following a brief return to Canada, Dr. Stafford-Smith rejoined Duke and has taken an active role in the cardiothoracic division ever since.

In 1997, Dr. Stafford-Smith took over directorship of the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship, and in 2006, added to his education role as the Department Fellowship Education Director. He has personally mentored more than 170 clinical and research cardiothoracic fellows, and served in numerous national leadership positions related to fellowship education during this time.

Dr. Stafford-Smith is a committed and innovative educator whose experience crosses the divide between education and research, a background that serves him well in his new role as Vice Chair of Education. It is his goal to enhance the experience of anesthesia trainees, regardless of their level of training, throughout the spectrum of their career trajectories from private practitioner to bench researcher.

“Mark brings both great leadership and great vision in innovative education to the Vice Chair role. We look forward to advancing our education programs under his leadership.” – Mark F. Newman, MD

Again, congratulations to Dr. Stafford-Smith and we look forward to working with him in his new role as a Vice Chair of Education.
