Duke’s New Clinical Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology

We would like to congratulate Dr. Swaminathan, who was recently appointed as the Clinical Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. Dr. Swaminathan came to Duke in 2000 for the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship, and in 2002, joined the department as a faculty member and developed his research interests in kidney outcomes after cardiac surgery.

In 2004, Dr. Swaminathan assumed a leadership role as the director of perioperative echocardiography at Duke, and has been involved in this field at both national and international levels with the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), the National Board of Echocardiography, and the NWAC World Anesthesia Convention. He currently serves the ASE on its board of directors and as the chair of the Council on Perioperative Echocardiography.

As Clinical Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Dr. Swaminathan’s responsibilities will include:

  1. Cardiothoracic operating room scheduling and management
  2. CTICU scheduling and management
  3. Cardiothoracic clinical quality improvement and continuing medical education

“Madhav has shown a great ability to understand clinical care systems and to work tirelessly to improve them. He will work with Mihai to ensure that the Cardiothoracic Division remains second to none both in clinical and academic quality.”– Mark F. Newman, MD

Again, congratulations to Dr. Swaminathan and we look forward to working with him in his new role as Clinical Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology.
