FAQ's: Applying to the Program

How many positions do you offer?

In the 2010 Match, we will be offering 14 positions: six categorical (4-yr) positions, six advanced (3-yr) positions, and two research (5-yr) positions that will begin in PGY-1 like the categorical positions, but which will also encompass a one year fellowship in addition to the core residency requirements. (The 5-yr program is the ACES program; more info can be found by following the ACES link on our website.) People matching to the advanced positions will do their clinical base years elsewhere and begin training with our program on July 1, 2011. We expect to fill all 14 positions through the Match. Applicants may specify any or all tracks when they apply through ERAS. Interview offers are not based upon applications to a specific track. After we have interviewed applicants, we stay in communication to sort out track preferences. Applicants may declare or change their preferences up until the time that we submit our lists.

We do not currently have, nor do we expect to have, any open CA-1 positions to start in July 2009 or July 2010.

How do I apply?

We accept applications only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). Our application requirements are the same as the standard ERAS application: the application, CV, personal statement, Medical Student Performance Evaluation (Dean’s letter), transcript, and three letters of recommendation. We require Step 1 USMLE scores of all applicants. Step 2 may be completed after the deadline. Successful completion of USMLE Step 1 and of Step 2 CS and CK is required by Duke Hospital prior to matriculation.

(Please note: We abide by the Duke GME policy on licensing examinations, with the added stipulation that we require passage of the USMLE Step 3 before beginning the PGY-2 year. Please see http://www.gme.duke.edu/hsmanual/usmlepolicy.htm)

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (the match) and abide by all match policies. See http://www.nrmp.org/ for more information. Please note that applicants must register with both NRMP and ERAS to participate in the services of each.

What is your application deadline?

Our application and supporting documentation deadline is November 1, 2009 (the day the MSPE/Dean's letters are released).

When do you interview applicants?

We hold interview days roughly every Monday and Friday from the middle of November to the end of January. The interview dates for 2009-2010 are:

  • Dates to be announced soon.
The interview day really begins the evening before, as the applicants and spouses/significant others are invited to join a number of residents and their significant others for dinner at a local restaurant. We consider this dinner a crucial part of the interview experience.

What tracks do you offer and how many positions?

We offer 6 positions in the Anesthesiology Categorical track, which will begin with the PGY-1 transitional internship year in June of 2009. We have offered this categorical internship for over eight years and it has been very successful and has done a great job of preparing residents for anesthesia. We also offer 2 “ACES” positions; the ACES scholars also participate in the categorical internship. (See the ACES link from this website for more info.) In the Anesthesiology Advanced track we offer 6 positions. People who match to the advanced program begin their training at Duke Anesthesiology in PGY-2 on July 1, 2011 with clinical anesthesia (CA-1) residency training. People who prefer a position in the 3-year program will do their clinical base year (a.k.a. internship) elsewhere. Please note: the clinical base year must meet the requirements of the ACGME and The American Board of Anesthesiologists, Inc.

To complete your ERAS application, you have to choose a track, or choose two or all three tracks. For our purposes, that is not a binding commitment. If you are invited to interview, you will find out more about each track, and we will ask your preference (again, either or both tracks) before our match list is submitted.

What are the requirements for international medical graduates?

We have a minimum USMLE cutoff score of 220 on all parts of the exam. IMGs must be ECFMG certified to be considered for an interview. We require some US clinical experience. (Observerships do not meet this requirement.) We do not have a timeframe for graduation from medical school. We are more interested in what you have done in the time since graduating. Applications are accepted only through ERAS. The type of visa offered will be considered on an individual basis.
