Please join us in extending our congratulations to Michael Manning, MD, PhD, MBA, associate professor of anesthesiology, on his appointment as medical director for mortality review at the Duke University Health System (DUHS).
In this role, Dr. Manning will provide system-wide leadership for the standardization, oversight, and continuous improvement of mortality review processes across DUHS. This role is critical to advancing DUHS priorities in patient safety and clinical quality, strengthening accountability, and ensuring that insights from mortality reviews translate into meaningful improvements in care delivery and outcomes.

Dr. Manning joined Duke Anesthesiology faculty in 2012 and currently serves as the department's director of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs. Dr. Manning completed his full training continuum at the University of Kentucky, earning his PhD, MD, general surgery internship, and subsequent anesthesiology residency training there, followed by a dual clinical and two-year research fellowship in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Duke University. As an accomplished physician-scientist, Dr. Manning's deep expertise in perioperative outcomes has driven extensive contributions to enhanced recovery and opioid stewardship literature. He is also a longstanding, dedicated educator and mentor.
