Doctors Assume New Roles in Anesthesia

I am pleased to announce that Drs. Gavin Martin, Madhav Swaminathan, and Stephen Klein have assumed new roles in anesthesia perioperative leadership. Effective September 1, 2015 they will share in Duke Hospital perioperative management as Assistant Directors of Anesthesia Perioperative Services. In these new roles they will assist Dr. Holly Muir, who currently serves as the Anesthesia Clinical Operations Director for Perioperative Services in Duke Hospital.

Dr. Martin is the Chief of the Division of Regional Anesthesiology and a member of the anesthesia perioperative leaders group. He will continue in these two roles in addition to becoming the anesthesia liaison in the post-anesthesia care unit. In this role, he will work with both the preoperative and post-operative nursing teams in establishing and enforcing policy, evaluating practice safety, and creating care pathways to better serve our patients.

Dr. Swaminathan is the Clinical Director for the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and serves as a member of the cardiac perioperative leaders group. He similarly will continue in these two roles in addition to serving as the pharmacy liaison for anesthesia. In this role, he will assist with the evaluation of anesthesia medication practices from the safety, cost, and efficiency perspective in order to create a collaborative environment with the hospital pharmacy.

Dr. Klein has been a key figure in delivery of our ambulatory services at Duke Hospital. He currently serves as Chief of the Division of Ambulatory Anesthesia and as the Medical Director of the Ambulatory Surgery Center. In addition to his current positions, he will lend his expertise to lead all of our ambulatory areas.

Please join me in supporting them in their goal of creating innovation and excellence in the care of our patients.
