Join us for an interactive one-day simulation training course in anesthesia crisis management that fulfills the simulation training requirement for Part IV (Practice Performance Assessment & Improvement) of Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology® (MOCA®).

Overview

Duke MOCA Sim At-a-Glance:

American Society of Anesthesiologists Endorsed Program - Simulation Education Network

As an ASA endorsed program, the Duke University Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center is offering a one-day simulation training course in anesthesia crisis management that fulfills the simulation training requirement for Part IV (Practice Performance Assessment & Improvement) of Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology® (MOCA ®).  Completion of the course provides board-certified anesthesiologists with MOCA ® credit toward one component of Part IV. Please consult the ABA website, www.theABA.org, for a list of all other MOCA ® requirements.  MOCA® and Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® are registered trademarks of The American Board of Anesthesiology, Inc.

Target Audience

The course is designed primarily for physician anesthesiologists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Develop a practice improvement plan to be submitted to the ABA.
  2. Manage a patient undergoing hemodynamic and/or respiratory critical events in the perioperative setting.
  3. Describe effective teamwork, leadership, and communication skills required in crisis management.
Trent Semans Center

Your day with us will begin with a general welcome and introductions, then followed by a brief lecture on patient safety and introduction to the simulation space. The remainder of the day will be spent performing simulated clinical scenarios carefully selected to represent common and infrequent critical events in anesthesia practice. Each simulation session will require participants to portray a member of the healthcare team (e.g. surgeon or nurse) with one diplomate acting as the anesthesiologist in charge (the ASA/ABA requires that each diplomate serve in this role at least once). The case will then be followed by an interactive debrief focused on identifying how delegates can improve their own practice. The day will conclude with the completion of a course evaluation.

The atmosphere for the day will be relaxed and the attire will be scrubs. Breakfast will be available by 7:30 AM with the day starting promptly at 7:45 AM. Breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and beverages will be provided. The session is usually completed by 3:30 PM.

The facilitators and staff at the Duke Simulation and Patient Safety Center are committed to providing you with a safe, meaningful, and fun opportunity to improve your clinical practice, network with fellow anesthesiologists, and enjoy the Raleigh-Durham area.
