Duke Anesthesiology Interest Group Recognized by the ASA

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has selected Duke’s Anesthesiology Interest Group (AIG) as the recipient of the 2024 award for Best Overall AIG.

The ASA recognizes Duke’s AIG for exemplifying the mission of the ASA Medical Student Component to encourage medical student participation in anesthesiology, provide resources for medical students pursuing careers in anesthesiology and providing leadership, research and education in the field of anesthesiology within its institution.

The mission of the AIG at the Duke University School of Medicine is to raise awareness about the diverse clinical practices in anesthesiology and inspire medical students to consider careers in this field; it aims to provide broader exposure to anesthesiology beyond the standard curriculum, including mentorship, educational opportunities, and hands-on experiences with Duke Anesthesiology faculty and residents. Duke’s AIG is led by faculty advisors Drs. Grace McCarthy (director of medical student education) and Abigail Melnick. The award reflects the hard work of last year’s student presidents Hannah Zang (MS4) and Trevor Sytsma (MS4).

“We are very proud of our Duke AIG for receiving this prestigious award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists,” say McCarthy and Melnick, assistant professors of anesthesiology. “This recognition not only highlights the dedication and hard work of our medical students but also underscores our unwavering commitment to fostering excellence in anesthesiology education, research, and leadership within our department and institution."
