Dr. Thompson Appointed to Associate Vice Chair Position

“I look forward to engaging with our exceptional clinical faculty to strengthen the innovation, quality and educational/training opportunities in the service of our patients. Duke is a special place where world-class clinical care and education co-exists with an innovative, team-oriented spirit,” says Dr. Thompson, professor of anesthesiology, medicine and population health sciences.

Dr. Thompson received her undergraduate and medical degree from Duke University before completing residency training in both internal medicine and anesthesiology at the University of California, San Francisco. Upon completion of a fellowship in both adult and pediatric cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University, she remained on faculty as an associate professor of anesthesiology and medicine. While practicing cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Vanderbilt, she served as the director of the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship for eight years, earning initial and continuing ACGME accreditation under her direction. Additionally, she served as the medical director of the Vanderbilt Preoperative Evaluation Center for more than 10 years and was tasked with leading a committee to develop a departmental clinical strategic plan in 2009, leading to a recommendation and plan for broader engagement through a perioperative medicine approach to patient care.

Dr. Thompson joined Duke Anesthesiology faculty in 2014 as director of the residency program, a nationally-acclaimed training program in which she leads approximately 60 interns and residents.

On a national scale, Dr. Thompson has participated in developing several guidelines in perioperative medicine, including the perioperative management of cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), the first multidisciplinary expert consensus statement on the management of CIEDs; the statement remains the clinical standard for guiding management of CIEDs in the perioperative period. She has also participated in the 2014 ACC/AHA guidelines for cardiovascular evaluation for noncardiac surgery and most recently the 2021 ACC/AHA guidelines for the management of valvular heart disease. She is a senior oral board examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology and is serving on the newly-established Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Examination MOCA Committee.

Please join us in thanking Dr. Thompson for her leadership and congratulating her on her new appointment in our department.
