Ambulatory Anesthesiology Division
The Ambulatory Anesthesiology Division provides state-of-the-art, innovative care to surgical patients having a diverse array of procedures in Duke’s expanding ambulatory platforms. Faculty are experts in multimodal analgesia and regional anesthetic techniques that are individualized for each patient, enabling same-day discharge. As pioneers in the field, the division’s research endeavors, such as continuous catheter delivery systems, mobile infusion pumps and novel care pathways, are credited internationally with advancing the types of procedures that can be safely done in the outpatient environment.
Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Division
The Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Division provides care to some of the most complex cardiothoracic surgical and medical patients across the perioperative spectrum. The clinical expertise of the division is complimented by a robust research mission, with contributions in transesophageal echocardiography, genomics, coagulation, and perioperative outcomes. Our faculty is actively engaged in training the next generation of leaders in anesthesiology through our nationally recognized fellowship and residency experience.
Critical Care Medicine Division
Faculty within the Critical Care Medicine Division provides expert care for patients suffering from a broad range of critical illnesses and injuries. These faculty provide world-class care to patients in multiple intensive care units at Duke University Hospital, Durham VA Medical Center, Duke Regional Hospital, and Duke Raleigh Hospital. The division has achieved national and international prominence as leaders in critical care, cutting-edge research and innovative education programs.
General, Vascular and Transplant Anesthesiology Division
Faculty within the General, Vascular and Transplant Anesthesiology Division are experts in the management of patients undergoing high-risk non-cardiac surgery. They provide world-class anesthesia care for patients undergoing colorectal surgery, liver and pancreatobiliary surgery, major vascular, urology, and endocrine surgery, as well as kidney, liver, pancreas and small bowel transplantation. The GVT Division has achieved national and international prominence as leaders in improving outcomes for patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.
Neuroanesthesiology, Otolaryngology and Offsite Anesthesiology Division
Faculty within the Neuroanesthesiology, Otolaryngology and Offsite Anesthesiology Division aim to support growth and ever-increasing clinical excellence in neurosurgery, otolaryngology, interventional radiology, and interventional psychiatry; through cutting-edge research, this division produces insights into the pathophysiology and treatment of complex neurologic syndromes and engages in a number of research initiatives aimed at transforming care in neuroanesthesia and critical care, ultimately advancing the field.
Pain Medicine Division
The Pain Medicine Division delivers care across the health system using the skills of multiple specialists, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, physical therapists, acupuncturists, and massage therapists. Its breadth of six clinical pain practices treats patients along the continuum of health care needs utilizing state-of-the-art interventions. The division’s comprehensive approach is interwoven with the research mission to develop novel, non-opioid therapies for the prevention and treatment of chronic pain.
Pediatric Anesthesiology Division
The Pediatric Anesthesiology Division provides expert care to all children in a family-centered environment. These pediatric specialized faculty are experts in managing a variety of surgeries, including general, transplant, open heart, orthopaedic, urological, and ear, nose, throat. The division’s comprehensive approach integrates specialized pain and regional anesthesia techniques to minimize postoperative discomfort. It has achieved national and international prominence through cutting-edge research in pain management and bleeding management during open-heart surgeries.
Orthopaedics, Plastics and Regional Anesthesiology Division
Faculty in the Orthopaedics, Plastics and Regional Anesthesiology Division are experts in the use of regional anesthetic techniques for both surgical anesthesia and the management of acute postoperative pain. They provide world-class anesthesia care for patients undergoing major joint replacement, spine and other orthopaedic procedures, as well as orthotrauma and plastic reconstructive surgery. This division has achieved national and international prominence as leaders in developing innovative enhanced recovery care pathways for patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery.
Veterans Affairs Anesthesiology Service Division
The Veterans Affairs Anesthesiology Service Division is committed to providing world-class care to the brave men and women who have served our nation. Faculty have expertise in a broad range of diagnostic and treatment methods, including high-risk surgical and critical care, perioperative medicine, transesophageal echocardiography and point-of-care ultrasound, regional and acute pain management, and treatment of chronic pain conditions. They conduct research in a wide variety of areas, with emphasis on chronic neuropathic pain syndromes and perioperative epidemiologic analyses.
Women’s Anesthesiology Division
Faculty within the Women’s Anesthesiology Division are experts in the care of obstetric patients, as well as women undergoing a range of gynecologic and urologic surgeries. They provide world-class labor analgesia and anesthesia care for women during childbirth, and patients undergoing surgeries of the reproductive and urologic systems. This division has achieved national and international prominence as leaders in the care of high-risk pregnant women.
