Dr. Treggiari Named FAER Mentoring Excellence in Research Awardee

The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) has selected Duke Anesthesiology’s Miriam Treggiari, MD, MPH, PhD, as this year’s recipient of its Mentoring Excellence in Research Award.

This prestigious accolade recognizes outstanding mentors who have demonstrated a profound, positive impact on the development and careers of mentees within the field of anesthesiology. As noted in FAER’s September 24 announcement, “Dr. Treggiari perfectly encapsulates these traits. Consistently recognized for her ‘unwavering commitment to mentorship,’ Dr. Treggiari has served as a wellspring of experience and thoughtful guidance for mentees and peers alike in the realms of anesthesiology and beyond.”

“I am deeply honored to receive FAER's Mentoring Excellence in Research Award. I am grateful to my mentees, who have taught me at least as much as I have taught them. This is their award, too,” says Treggiari, the Paul G. Barash Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology, a professor in population health sciences and neurology, and the department’s vice chair for research. “I would like to thank FAER for this recognition and its sustained commitment to supporting anesthesiology and nurturing the next generation of anesthesiology researchers. I am proud to be part of that mission.”

The depth of Treggiari’s impact is best captured by nominations from her mentees:

“Equally impactful is the way she leads, with humility, kindness, and integrity, molding not only my research trajectory but also the kind of academic leader and mentor I aspire to become.”

“Miriam empowered me. She taught me to pursue my dreams. Before meeting Miriam I did not know what true mentorship was. Now I know what it is and how it can raise people up, particularly women. In the future, I want to help lift up other women so they can pursue their dreams, like me.”

“Wherever she has gone, she has cultivated research, leaving in her wake an enduring network of successful investigators. There is a Miriam Treggiari researcher lineage with numerous investigations being conducted across the country that carry her imprint.”

In addition to providing exceptional training that prepares mentees for successful careers as physician-scientists, Treggiari is recognized for mentorship that extends beyond traditional scientific instruction. She has played a pivotal role in establishing and refining collaborative research infrastructures across multiple leading academic departments. These structural contributions have enhanced institutional pathways, enabling future generations of investigators to collaborate, develop, and advance their research agendas.

Treggiari will be presented the Mentoring Excellence in Research Award on October 19 during the Celebration of Research at the ASA Annual Meeting in San Diego.

This national recognition further cements Treggiari’s status as a transformative figure in her field. Notably, she is the first woman in the history of Duke Anesthesiology to receive a distinguished professorship — the highest honor that Duke bestows on its faculty members, recognizing the institution’s most accomplished faculty who have demonstrated extraordinary scholarship in advancing science and improving human health.
