Dr. Bautista Earns Distinguished Educator Award

The American Society of Anesthesiologists and Society for Education in Anesthesia have awarded Duke Anesthesiology’s Alexander Bautista, MD, MBA, the Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology Award, recognizing his significant contributions to advancing patient care through anesthesiology education.

The Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology Award recognizes exceptional faculty who advance medical education through dedicated teaching and leadership. Recipients typically demonstrate a proven track record of educational stewardship within their departments, academic institutions, and professional societies. Furthermore, their contributions are underscored by high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship that offers novel insights into anesthesiology training and broader health care curricula.

“I have always identified myself as an educator, and I consider it a privilege to help inspire and mentor the next generation of physician anesthesiologists and pain physicians,” says Bautista, a pain medicine specialist and professor of anesthesiology. “One of the most rewarding parts of my career is seeing former trainees grow, forge their own paths, and succeed in ways that are meaningful to them. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play even a small role in their development.”

Bautista is part of a select group of anesthesiologists who have received this award. He and award recipients will be recognized in October at the ANESTHESIOLOGY annual meeting in San Diego.
