We are pleased to announce that Sundar Krishnan, MBBS, associate professor of anesthesiology, has been appointed director of our department's Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship, effective August 1.
In this role, Dr. Krishnan will oversee the clinical, educational, and administrative operations of the fellowship program. His responsibilities include recruiting top tier candidates and guiding trainees in high-level clinical practice and academic research. By fostering a rigorous yet supportive learning environment, he will ensure that fellows graduate with the advanced skills required for independent, specialized practice.
Dr. Krishnan joined Duke Anesthesiology faculty as an associate professor in 2020. He earned his MBBS at All India Institute of Medical in 1999, where he went on to complete his residency training in anesthesiology. After working in India and South Africa for a few years, he subsequently advanced his clinical expertise by completing fellowships in both cardiothoracic anesthesia and critical care medicine at the University of Iowa. Following his training there, he joined as faculty and was appointed vice chair of education.
Since arriving at Duke, Dr. Krishnan has been a key faculty in education for medical students, residents, and fellows in cardiac anesthesiology and cardiothoracic critical care, as well as a director of our online clinical nutrition and Morpheus perioperative programs. He is also board certified in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography. On a national level, Dr. Krishnan has served as a mentor for the Point of Care Ultrasound Certificate Program for the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He has written nine textbook chapters and authored 19 papers.
Please join us in extending congratulations to Dr. Krishnan on his new leadership role, while also offering our sincere gratitude to Dr. Michael Cutrone for his exceptional service as the ACTA Fellowship director and wishing him the best in his future endeavors.
