Vice Chair Receives Master Clinician/Teacher Award

The Duke University School of Medicine has selected Duke Anesthesiology’s Mark Stafford-Smith, MD, CM, FRCPC, FASE, as a recipient of the Master Clinician/Teacher Award for 2018. It was established to honor individuals for superlative accomplishment and service in the area of medical school/medical center teaching and/or clinical care. Award recipients are noted for making an extraordinary commitment “above and beyond” normal expectations; those who may be considered “unsung heroes” at Duke.

“It is a true honor to receive this award. So many talented clinicians and educators walk the halls of this institution, and it is humbling to be recognized among them in this way,” says Dr. Stafford-Smith, vice chair of education within Duke Anesthesiology. “The daily opportunities to teach bright, enthusiastic individuals and provide compassionate care as a part of highly-skilled teams make working at Duke a privilege and a pleasure. The collective desire to continue the quest for such excellence is what keeps me coming back every day for more.”

Dr. Stafford-Smith, professor of anesthesiology, will receive this award at the annual Spring Faculty Meeting on May 9 at the Doris Duke Center. He is also the director of Duke Anesthesiology’s Fellowship Education Program. Dr. Stafford-Smith joined the department’s faculty in 1996. His main focus of research is the understanding and prevention of acute kidney injury after cardiac and other major surgeries.
