The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) has selected Duke Anesthesiology’s Paul Wischmeyer, MD, EDIC, FASPEN, FCCM, as the recipient of the 2025 Bruce R. Bistrian Nutrition Mentorship Award and Honorary Lecture.
This prestigious award honors past president, Bruce R. Bistrian, MD, PhD, MPH, for his pivotal role in the advancement of clinical nutrition research and mentorship. It recognizes a clinician or scientist working in complex clinical nutrition who has made a significant contribution to the field and serves as a mentor to interprofessional colleagues.
“This award is particularly meaningful to me as Dr. Bistrian was a pioneer in the field of parenteral nutrition, a therapy that has saved my life many times as a patient both in and out of the hospital. Our many interactions during my young career helped inspire me to pursue a career focused on advancing clinical nutrition science and mentoring,” says Wischmeyer, professor of anesthesiology and in surgery. “I can only hope that I can honor the legacy of one of the true legends and giants in the nutrition field by helping to train the next generation of clinical nutrition leaders in a time when our field is in desperate need of strong clinicians and researchers who will continue to grow and lead our specialty for years to come.”
Wischmeyer currently serves as Duke Anesthesiology’s associate vice chair for clinical research and co-director of the department’s Duke Online Clinical Nutrition Course and Fellowship, as well as director of the TPN/Nutrition Team at Duke. His clinical and research focus is in critical care, perioperative care exercise, and nutrition to help patients prepare and recover from illness and surgery.
Wischmeyer will be presented with the Bruce R. Bistrian Nutrition Mentorship Award at the ASPEN Nutrition Science and Practice Conference in March of 2025, where he will also deliver the honorary lecture.
