
We are pleased to announce that Padma Gulur, MD, has been appointed the sole executive vice chair of our department, merging the performance and operations tasks and the strategy and finance tasks into one position, effective immediately.
In this new role, Dr. Gulur will continue to be responsible for driving program development in key areas, including multidisciplinary initiatives within the Duke University Health System to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients in the perioperative continuum. She will also continue to work with our division chiefs to align divisional and departmental goals and performance. In addition, she will assume leadership over the financial position of the department, integrating financial planning with strategic and operational planning, to drive the overall business performance and ensure our department’s continued success.
Dr. Gulur is a professor of anesthesiology and population health sciences and is board certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine, specializing in advanced interventional pain management. She arrived at Duke in 2016, joining our faculty as the vice chair for performance and operations; two years later, she was appointed executive vice chair for performance and operations. Her current leadership positions at Duke include the director of pain management strategy and opioid surveillance for the Duke University Health System (appointed in 2019) and the medical director of the Inpatient Pain Service.
At a national level, Dr. Gulur is an American Medical Association CPT advisor and chair of the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee. She is also vice chair of the MOCA Committee for Pain Medicine at the American Board of Anesthesiology.
