Dr. Moon Honored with Distinguished Award for Diving Science

The Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences has awarded Duke Anesthesiology’s Richard Moon, MD, the 2025 NOGI Award for Science in recognition of his career accomplishments in the science of diving.

The NOGI recognizes ocean-related leaders in the fields of art, distinguished services, environment, science and sports- education. Awardees are described as explorers, inventors, doctors, and scientists whose work helps us understand, enjoy and protect our precious underwater realm.

“For me this is a huge honor, which was possible due to the fabulous mentorship I have received during my career, along with the colleagues, technical staff and students who have worked with me,” says Moon, professor of anesthesiology and medical director of the Duke Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology.

Dr. Moon was among the five recipients who received their awards at the 64th Annual NOGI Awards Gala on November 12 in Orlando. This year's NOGI honorees are particularly distinguished because their peers—previous award winners—exclusively nominated and voted for them, highlighting deep recognition within the diving community for their significant contributions.
