Join us for a three-day, TEE preceptorship course designed for physicians involved in perioperative care of patients with cardiovascular disease who desire to enhance their diagnostic skills with transesophageal echocardiography.

Overview

Participants in the Duke Intraoperative TEE Preceptorship spend one three-day session in the cardiac operating suites, observing techniques of intraoperative TEE and interpretation of images. Preceptee will participate in active discussions with cardiothoracic anesthesia faculty during live TEE imaging in the OR pre and post cardiopulmonary bypass. They will also learn how to troubleshoot difficult cases and enhance their decision-making skills in the operating room. Also, cases from pathology libraries will be used to augment the preceptorship experience.

Course Features and Topics

  • Preceptorship experience will be customized based on starting level of experience and areas of interest of the preceptee. (Preceptorship is observation only*and only one or two preceptees per three-day session)

Target Audience

This TEE Preceptorship Course is designed for physicians involved in perioperative care of patients with cardiovascular disease who desire to enhance their diagnostic skills with transesophageal echocardiography. Participating physicians should have a basic understanding of techniques of echocardiography in practice or through other instructional courses. Physicians who plan to take the National Board of Echocardiography examination in perioperative TEE will benefit from the preceptorship experience.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Perform a comprehensive TEE exam. Assess global cardiac function and identify valvular pathology.
  2. Demonstrate the appropriate use of various imaging modalities including three-dimensional echocardiography.
  3. Apply echocardiographic information to enhance surgical decision-making and perioperative clinical management of the cardiac surgical patient.

*Hands-on experience is limited to knobology. No patient contact is permitted. NC Medical Board license and Duke Hospital credentialing is mandatory for clinical patient contact.

Additional Days:

If preceptees wish to extend their preceptorship experience beyond the three-day session, they may do so at a charge of $1,250 USD per day for a maximum of two subsequent and consecutive days. Preceptees must indicate at the time of registration and include the additional amount with the registration fee. The extended days are not a part of the CME-approved course and CME credits will not be awarded for activities on extended days.

Cancellation/Refund Policy:

A written notice of cancellation must be received 15 days prior to the start of the activity. A $25 cancellation fee will be assessed at that time, as well as a 3% credit card processing fee. After that date, cancellation requests cannot be honored. Although every effort will be made to provide the best experience of intraoperative echocardiography in cardiac surgery cases, we cannot guarantee that a fixed number of cardiac surgeries will be performed during the Preceptorship week and cannot be held responsible for surgery cancellations for whatever reasons. In the event of cancelled surgeries or low case volumes, we will hold didactic teaching with emphasis on interactive sessions and case reviews with expert faculty.
