The HSPSC has an active healthcare human factors engineering program.
Some of our projects include:
- A usability evaluation of a patient health record
- Analysis of information use in intensive care to support better organization of electronic health data
- The standardization of patient handovers from the operating room to the intensive care unit
- An examination of anesthesia providers\’ prospective memory failures in the operating room
- Simulation to determine the impact of the number of patients monitored by cardiac telemetry technicians on response time to critical arrhythmias
The SimCenter also participates in the design and usability testing of new medical equipment.
Patient safety and quality improvement projects include modeling and implementation of the Duke Maternal Hemorrhage Protocol as well as pharmaceutical clinical trials modeling. Currently, the HSPSC, among a number of internal educational and quality improvement offerings, is engaged in nine research projects totaling over $7.4 million in funding.
The DREAM Campaign supports innovative approaches to patient safety, education and research led by Dr. Ankeet Udani and his partners.
