Duke Pain Medicine is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of chronic pain patients. This team of specialists strives to deliver comprehensive, diagnostic and interventional pain medicine while seeking translational scientific discovery to reduce the burden of chronic pain in the future. They evaluate and manage higher-risk pain patients, as well as offer interventions for spine and back pain, sciatica, nerve injury, arthritis, cancer pain and spasticity. This newly-renovated clinic includes patient examination rooms and a procedure area with an ultrasound/fluoroscopy room.

Duke Perioperative Pain Care is the first clinic in the country where the same team of pain specialists see patients before, during and after their surgery with a focus on optimizing their functional recovery from surgery. This team of specialists works with patients to create personalized care plans to identify pain management needs before, during and up to 90 days following their in-patient stay at Duke University Hospital to reduce the risk of developing persistent post-surgical pain.

The Perioperative Anesthesia and Surgical Screening (PASS) Clinic is designed to help patients improve their overall well-being as they prepare for surgery, in order to positively impact their surgical experience and long-term health outcomes.
Services Offered Include:
- Gather information about patients’ current and past medical conditions
- Perform tests or studies, indicated by patients’ medical history, to best prepare them for surgery
- Identify potential conditions that may increase patients’ risk of postsurgical complications
- Provide patients with guidance and strategies to best prepare them for surgery through referral to one of Duke’s perioperative optimization clinics.
- This includes but is not limited to anemia, chronic pain, diabetes, nutrition, obstructive sleep apnea, and smoking cessation
